How therapy can help
After therapy people feel more able to accept what happened to them. In most cases they are no longer troubled by distressing thoughts and feelings so they feel calmer. When this happens they are ready to take steps to build their lives again.
Most of all they feel more hopeful about their future.
What I offer
When we work together on your trauma or stressful life events I’d like to help you first understand why you are feeling like you do. To do this we will spend some time learning what happens to your mind and body following a traumatic event. You will see that what you are experiencing is an intense but natural response to what you have been through.
Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)
To help you work through your painful experiences I may use a therapy called EMDR. To start, we must ensure that you can handle the intense reactions that often come up during this therapy. This could be helping you find a place in your mind where you feel calm – like a beach or stream.
When you feel ready, I will guide you to think about the traumatic memories surrounding the stressful events. At the same time you will follow a moving light on screen or tap each side of your body. Although this sounds strange there are many studies that show this helps people to work through their upsetting memories.
Just like when you dream, the rapid eye movements have been shown to help your brain process the distress you are feeling associated with the memories. This means you no longer feel overwhelmed when reminded of those events in your everyday life.
We will also work through any difficulties you are still having in your day-to-day life. Lastly we will think about any future worries you have and help you feel more equipped to handle them.
What about the rest of your life?
While EMDR helps a lot of people it is not a ‘one size fits all’ therapy. That’s why I often draw on other therapies I am experienced in that work well alongside EMDR. This is to make sure that you and your individual needs are met.
EMDR can help to reduce your intense emotional reactions and feel more confident to face future fears. But how do you start to rebuild your life following a trauma or significant event?
Coming to terms with a trauma or stressful life event can take time. I can help you to explore what’s important to you now in your life. Then think about the choices you make that will move you towards the way of living that’s right for you.
